Founded in 1913, Pine Valley Golf Club is one of the most esteemed golf courses and is located at Pine Valley,Camden County in Southern
New Jersey. Designed by George Crump/ H.S. Colt, the Golf Course is currently ranked the number one course in Golf Magazine's 100 Top Courses in the U.S. and the world.
Overview
The Pine Valley golf course opened in 1918 with an underlying principle of an island for the course. The tee is an island and the fairway, despite being 50-55 yards wide, is also an island. The 18-hole "Pine Valley" course has sand, scrub, rough, dense woods, sometimes water and even steep falloffs.
The slope from the regular tees is 153. The 623 acre tract is only 15 miles from Philadelphia. The last hole (par 4, 425-483 yards) falls from a peak tee to a broad fairway. The golf course has a collection of two shotters, one shot holes and three hole finish.
The Course
The course is one of the toughest challenges in all of golf. “Hell’s half acre” (a wasteland on the 7th hole) and the 18th finishing hole are some of the trademarks of Pine Valley Golf club.
Facilities
The Pine Valley Golf Club offers shuttle service to and from the airport. They also provide 6 cottages, a lodge and some older homes for people to stay at.
Tournaments at Pine Valley
Although it is one of the finest courses in the world, Pine valley doesn’t have enough room on the course to accommodate spectators. This is one of the prime reasons for which it hasn’t played host to any major tournaments. However, it had a mainstream exposure in 1962 with the Wonderful World of Golf match between Gene Littler and Byron Nelson. It also played host to the Walker Cup in 1936 and 1985.
Membership
The club offers exclusive male-only memberships for people by invitation from the board of directors only. It has around 1,300 members.
